Halitosis or in simple terms “bad breath” is a condition that many of us suffer from. When we emit an unpleasant odor from our mouths, it is said that we are suffering from “bad breath”.

Halitosis is believed to be the third most important reason for people to see a dentist. The other two main reasons are tooth decay and periodontal disease (gum disease).

Bad breath can result from poor dental habits or may be a sign of a more serious health problem. Even the types of foods we eat can make our breath smell.

What are the kind of habits to fight bad breath?
Firstly, ensure that you brush on a daily basis. This itself is essential to combat bad breath. If you don’t brush daily, then food particles can remain stuck in your teeth and around the gums and on the tongue. Flossing also helps to get rid of food particles.  Then become rich grounds for bacteria to act and multiply thus causing bad.
Secondly avoid smoking or chewing tobacco based products. These not only cause bad breath, but stain the teeth, reduce your ability to taste foods and irritate the gums.
Thirdly antibacterial mouthwash can also help to combat the problem. Along with this, using an interdental toothbrush ( details here) will help you with the problem. Eating meals on time and regular food habits will also help. Remember, persistent bad breath may be a warning sign of deeper disease like gum disease. If gum disease continues untreated, it can damage the gums and jawbone.

Very rarely, bad breath is a symptom of a very serious medical condition like liver failure.
But in most cases a visit to your dentist, combined with healthy oral hygiene will be enough to solve your problem.
